Serious play is a form of pedagogy.

We are all better at things that we enjoy doing.

I'm Kevin, the owner of wKw Architect PC. This is my simple design practice that feeds off the years of practice as a carpenter, furniture designer, historic / commercial interior architect, residential architect, educator, and from all the tree forts and models my brother and I learned from building.

What I do:

I provide professional design services for residential and small commercial interior architecture clients to help translate their ideas into crafted schematic design packages and study models for contractor review.

Each schematic design exercise provides the client a method of exploring design ideas with professional level plans, section studies, 3d graphics and study models if needed to help a partner contractor develop reasonable schematic pricing before a committed documentation investment.

My residential projects range from single family custom homes, to contemporary multi use additions and accessory dwelling units for aging in place or universal design needs.

Custom industrial design and fabrication management with millwork, CNC, plasma cutting, welding or other custom fabrication methods within my circle of trade resources are available.

My commercial work ranges from historic renovations / adaptive reuse, corporate interior architecture and notable public venues within the Washington DC area.

If the residential or commercial work proceeds to construction and permit drawings, wKw may continue the development and management as Architect of record under a design build partnership with an approved Virginia class A contractor. Additional design expertise such as interior designers and engineers would be secured as needed under separate contracts.

Both commercial and permit related residential work must be performed by reputable class A contractors with upstanding reputations and recommendations.

Existing Partnerships

Residential  - Phoenix Home Services - Class A - Over 10k
Edwin Ponce - Residential Carpentry - Class C - Under 10k

I enjoy work that is creatively challenging and is a positive influence on any existing context. I strive to find that "sweet spot" solution to a design problem that also conveys a sense of artistic composition within a budget.

My years as a design educator have let me work with hundreds of students instilling the importance of design exploration and the filtering out of temporary design trends that become environmental waste. My simplified graphics are designed as guides to allow the owner more comfortable interaction with the design process.

Raised in the military, my family and I enjoyed the opportunity to experience a vast range of architecture and social influences while growing up across the United States. My travel and international friendships have introduced me to an array of social design influences and opportunities which have helped developed my interest in rapid install shelters and simplified construction design. Like many of my design colleagues, I am trying to help provide thoughtful, social and environmentally sensitive design for all.

I hope you enjoy exploring my site. Thanks for visiting.

Fee Schedule

Hourly consultation and design development and production rate is $125 per hour and invoiced monthly.

Total hours needed for schematic design and development depend on the project complexity and access to any existing plans and documents. The schematic design process is used to flesh out the majority of the design decisions and to invite prospective contractors for schematic estimate ranges, schedules, and compatibility. I am happy to forward a PDF example of a schematic design document upon request. Schematic designs are not used for formal contractor bids and are not formal construction documents.

Formal bid documents, construction documents, permit sets and project management services typically range between 10% to 12% of the total construction costs which is billed at the hourly rate and invoiced monthly. These require a formal contract with a retainer depending on the complexity of the project, experience with the selected contractor, and project schedule.
